Embarking on a tech-savvy home renovation, I envisioned a high-speed network backbone for my newly acquired English cottage. The goal? To create a seamless, ultra-fast connection between the main house, office outbuilding, and garage, complete with a robust security setup. This journey began with a meticulous planning phase, focusing on network infrastructure and security. The plan? To implement a 10GbE LAN, ensuring every device, from the server to IP cameras, operates at peak performance. The challenge? To navigate the property's unique layout, with a main house, office, and garage, and devise a strategy for conduit installation and fiber optic cable management. The key to success? A modular approach, using junction boxes for expansion and shielded Cat6a cabling for 2.5GbE downlinks. The hardware selection was crucial, with a primary switch in the garage, a compact switch in the house, and a third in the office, all interconnected via 10GbE SFP+ ports. This setup ensures no bottlenecks and provides ample bandwidth for streaming 4K content, hosting services, and running video game servers. To enhance security, I introduced VLANs, creating virtual networks for primary devices, workstations, IP cameras, IoT hardware, guests, and network infrastructure. This segmentation, monitored through OPNsense, allows for easy troubleshooting and network performance analysis. The result? A highly secure, high-performance LAN, ready to support my tech-driven lifestyle.
