ASEAN Secretary-General's Keynote at Festival of Ideas & Higher Education Leadership Forum 2025 (2026)

Get ready for an insightful journey as we delve into the world of ASEAN and its remarkable journey!

ASEAN: Uniting Southeast Asia

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, is a powerhouse of regional cooperation and unity. Founded on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, Thailand, ASEAN was born out of the vision of its Founding Fathers: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. These nations came together to sign the ASEAN Declaration, also known as the Bangkok Declaration, marking a historic moment in Southeast Asian history.

But here's where it gets interesting: ASEAN's membership has expanded significantly over the years. Brunei Darussalam joined the fold on January 7, 1984, followed by Viet Nam on July 28, 1995. Then, in a wave of growth, Lao PDR and Myanmar became members on July 23, 1997, and Cambodia joined on April 30, 1999. Today, ASEAN proudly stands as a community of ten vibrant Member States.

A Journey of Growth and Vision

In 2009, ASEAN leaders unveiled their roadmap for the future: the ASEAN Community. This ambitious initiative was built on three robust pillars: the Political-Security Community, the Economic Community, and the Socio-Cultural Community. After years of dedicated work, the ASEAN Community was officially launched in 2015, marking a significant milestone in the region's history.

And this is the part most people miss: the vision didn't stop there. In 2015, ASEAN introduced its Post-2015 Vision, known as ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together. This vision encompasses a range of blueprints, including the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025, the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint 2025, and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025. These blueprints provide a comprehensive roadmap for ASEAN's future, ensuring its continued growth and unity.
