Mr. Carney, addressing reporters after an Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea, acknowledged the offense caused by the ad, stating, 'I did apologise to the president.' The ad's use of Reagan's words, which warned against the negative impact of tariffs, sparked a response from Mr. Trump, who deemed it fraudulent and accused it of misrepresenting his predecessor's stance.
However, it's important to note that Reagan himself was cautious about tariffs, as evidenced by the 1987 address. He emphasized that tariffs are short-lived solutions that harm American workers and consumers, and he warned that they often lead to retaliation and trade wars.
