The Cavaliers are about to catch a much-needed break, but will it be enough?
This Sunday, the Cleveland Cavaliers are set to face the Oklahoma City Thunder, and for once this season, Cleveland might be on the favorable side of an injury report. The Cavs have been battling a lengthy list of ailments themselves, but it appears their luck might be turning, at least for this particular matchup. The Thunder, on the other hand, are currently grappling with a significant number of key players sidelined.
While the official injury report is still being finalized, we already know that the Thunder will be without their reigning MVP and Finals MVP, Shai-Gilgeous-Alexander (SGA). He's nursing an abdominal strain and won't be re-evaluated until sometime next week. This is a huge blow, as SGA has been putting up incredible numbers, averaging a staggering 31.8 points per game this season. Adding to Oklahoma City's woes, another vital offensive contributor, Jalen Williams (J-Dub), will also be absent due to a hamstring injury. Williams has been a consistent force, contributing 17.5 points per game.
Meanwhile, the Cavaliers are looking remarkably healthy. Aside from Max Strus, who is dealing with a foot injury, Cleveland appears to have a relatively clear roster. In a strategic move, Evan Mobley was rested on the second night of their recent back-to-back games, strongly suggesting he'll be ready to go for Sunday's contest.
But here's where it gets controversial: Even with these significant absences for the Thunder, dismissing them would be a mistake. Oklahoma City remains a formidable team, capable of challenging any opponent. Their defensive anchor, Chet Holmgren, is a force to be reckoned with, and he'll be supported by a strong cast including Cason Wallace, Lu Dort, and Alex Caruso. These players form an elite defensive unit that can stifle even the most potent offenses.
And this is the part most people miss: Lu Dort, in particular, has a history of effectively shutting down the Cavaliers' star guard, Donovan Mitchell. Mitchell has struggled against Dort in recent matchups, shooting a mere 11-of-49 from the field in his last three games against the Thunder. Dort's physical style and defensive prowess seem to be a perfect counter to Mitchell's explosive game. Could the presence of a player like James Harden (if he were on the team, which he isn't, but it's an interesting thought experiment!) alleviate some of the offensive burden on Mitchell against this tough defense?
Without SGA and J-Dub, the Thunder will certainly lack their usual offensive firepower. However, keep a close eye on Jared McCain, a recent acquisition from the trade deadline. McCain demonstrated his scoring ability by dropping a season-high 21 points off the bench in a recent win against the Brooklyn Nets. His speed and agility as a guard could pose a significant problem for the Cavaliers' defense.
