OpenAI is Testing Group Conversations in ChatGPT
OpenAI is piloting a new feature in ChatGPT that allows users to create group conversations with friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. This feature is currently being tested in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. The goal is to make it easier for people to collaborate and communicate in a more natural and interactive way.
One of the key benefits of this feature is that ChatGPT can act as a helpful participant in the conversation. For example, if you're planning a vacation, ChatGPT can help build an itinerary, suggest activities, and provide recommendations. If you're working on a renovation project, it can offer ideas and suggestions. And if you're planning a night out, it can help find a restaurant that everyone in the chat would enjoy.
To start a group chat, simply tap on the people icon at the top right corner of the screen. ChatGPT will create a new conversation without your chat history if you start from an existing chat. You can then add people or share a link to the group conversation with up to 20 people. Each participant must set up a profile with their name, username, and a photo.
It's important to note that anyone who has the link can invite people to the chat, and participants can mute or remove other participants at any time, except for the group creator. Additionally, if anyone in the chat is under 18, the chatbot automatically limits sensitive content for everyone's safety.
The group chat feature is powered by GPT-5.1 Auto, which can choose the best model to respond with based on the prompt. OpenAI says it has trained the chatbot to follow the flow of group conversations, so it knows when to stay quiet and when to respond. Participants can always summon the chatbot by mentioning "ChatGPT."
OpenAI is committed to improving this feature based on feedback from early users before it's rolled out widely. The company believes that this feature has the potential to revolutionize the way people collaborate and communicate, making it more efficient and effective.
