Freezing temperatures and a sudden power outage? That's the unwelcome reality faced by residents of East Lothian tonight. A blackout has plunged homes into darkness, leaving families without essential electricity as the mercury dips below zero.
Reports indicate that the power went out in Longniddry and Aberlady due to two high-voltage network outages on the evening of January 8th. The first disruption hit Longniddry shortly before 6:30 PM, followed by Aberlady about an hour later.
Scottish Power initially estimated that power would be restored by 9 PM for Longniddry and 9:30 PM for Aberlady. One Longniddry resident, whose power returned after roughly 30 minutes, expressed concerns about potential recurrence.
"Everything went out around 7:30 PM. I checked the switchboard, but it seemed normal," the resident explained. "When I looked outside, the whole neighborhood was dark. With so many young families here, heating and power are crucial in this cold. Phone signal and 5G are also pretty poor on some networks, so it was a bit worrying. Luckily, it wasn't out for very long, maybe 20 minutes."
He further noted that the clocks on his appliances had reset earlier in the day, suggesting a prior outage. "With the weather worsening soon, we'll all be relying on stable power," he added.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in effect for Edinburgh and the Lothians until midday on Friday, January 9th, with the Met Office forecasting 'wintry showers and patchy ice.' The current temperature in East Lothian is around zero degrees Celsius, feeling like -2C with the wind chill.

But here's where it gets controversial... Could the aging infrastructure be the root cause? And what about the increasing strain on the power grid during peak winter demand?
