Bridget Bolland, a key figure in keeping the part-time sixth-tier side afloat, shares a glimpse into the club's unique post-match traditions. "Normally, visiting teams enjoy a simple meal of sausage and chips on a bench by the skittles alley. Just imagining Bruno Fernandes or Erling Haaland joining us here is a mind-boggling thought!"
But fate had other plans. Weston, the ambitious National League South side, found themselves preparing for a different battle - a tie against Grimsby Town, the fourth-tier team that had already shocked Manchester United in the Carabao Cup. Scott Rogers, the manager and a United fan, confesses, "I was furious that night, but now I'm hoping we can create our own magic. Upsets happen in the Cup, and we want to be the next big story!"
As the players gather for their analysis meeting, the atmosphere is electric. Gary Warren, the assistant manager, emphasizes the importance of every second, "The only rest you'll get is at half-time, full-time, and when the final whistle blows." Rogers adds, "Let's be proactive. Reaching the first round is a massive achievement for a non-league team, and getting to the third is almost unprecedented."
Weston's squad is a diverse mix, ranging from seasoned veterans to ambitious youngsters. They overcame division rivals Chelmsford City in the previous round, with Louis Britton, a Bristol-born striker, stealing the show. After the match, the team celebrated with supporters at a nearby pub, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
"We shared a few beers with the fans, and it was incredible," recalls Michael Smith, a 37-year-old full-back with 19 caps for Northern Ireland. "This level of football is all about these moments. You wouldn't get this with league clubs, but giving back to the fans is special. It was a great day."
The journey back to Somerset was a memorable one. "We were well-lubricated, let's just say that," Smith adds with a smile. Rogers, ever the thoughtful manager, bought a crate of beers for the bus ride home, and even joined the party after calling his parents.
"I needed a moment to myself on the coach. It had been chaotic, and I wanted some peace. I had my notebook filled with squiggles, and at the 83rd minute, I wrote, 'Please, God.' It's been a rollercoaster, and I've been praying a lot lately... come on, give us one more!"
Weston's squad is a microcosm of society, featuring players from various walks of life - builders, teachers, labourers, and even lecturers like their captain, Emlyn Lewis, who works at Cardiff Metropolitan University. "We had to plan our annual leave carefully for the trip north," Lewis explains.
Among the squad is Charlie Cummins, a young talent on loan from Exeter, and experienced players like Adam May, Dom Bernard, and Scott Wilson, who have graced League One and League Two. Smith, too, has his share of FA Cup memories, having faced Chelsea with Peterborough in 2017. "Chelsea went on to win the Premier League that season. It was a star-studded squad - Pedro, Fàbregas, Kanté, John Terry."
Emlyn Lewis's doctoral thesis delved into the lives of eight managers, exploring the pressures and boundaries (or lack thereof) of their jobs. "How do coaches manage the everyday stresses? The research showed there are no boundaries; it's a 24/7 commitment. I'm grateful to those managers who allowed me into their lives for a year."
Jacob Cane, the club's longest-serving player, has made over 400 appearances across 11 years. He recalls his early days at Weston, sharing lifts with Ollie Watkins, now of Aston Villa, and Matt Jay of Torquay. "That winter, we trained on a mud bath, but now we have a sleek artificial surface. I remain close friends with Ollie, and I attended the Euro 2024 final to support him. We still talk about his time here."
Weston's progress hasn't gone unnoticed in the town. Rogers shares, "My uncle Martyn, who managed for 36 years, never got past the first round. When we reached the second round this season, he was in awe. To do it again... everyone kept asking who we wanted. I always tell my kids not to be greedy, but Bristol City would've been my dream. I was an apprentice there and was released."
Weston has a rich family history; last summer, Paul Bliss stepped down as chair after 39 years, passing the torch to his son Oli, with his brother Ed as vice-chair. Paul, turning 80 next year, will be joined by nine other Bliss family members at Grimsby, where Weston has a 1,200-strong allocation. This season, they renamed a stand after their president, Dennis Usher, whose association with the club spans decades.
The victory over Chelmsford is a cherished memory, but Weston's eyes are set on another historic triumph. The FA Cup run has generated approximately £150,000 for the club, which usually operates on a mid-table budget. Oli Bliss, who budgeted for two wins across the FA Cup and FA Trophy, says, "If we go through, it will be a momentous day."
