The effects crew at Industrial Light + Magic (ILM) employed a clever technique, combining real photography and an optical trick. They floated the model through San Francisco Bay towards a Marin Island, later replaced with a matte painting. This achievement in model work, praised during '1941''s release, showcased Spielberg and ILM's ingenuity, ensuring no creative endeavor went to waste.
A Gag Reimagined
'1941' also contributed a deleted scene that found its way into 'Raiders'. Spielberg envisioned Christopher Lee's Captain Wolfgang Von Kleinschmidt intimidating Slim Pickens' Hollis Wood with a seemingly menacing coat hanger. However, audiences failed to find the humor in it. Despite Spielberg's satisfaction with the scene, it was cut from all versions of '1941'.
Yet, the director's persistence paid off. The same gag, reimagined in 'Raiders', where Major Toht menaces Marion by slowly unveiling his coat hanger, received a warmer reception.
