Uzoho's Early Return to the Super Eagles: A Joyful Homecoming
The Super Eagles' goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, is thrilled to be back in the national team fold for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. His return comes as a surprise, given his previous exclusion from the team after a costly mistake against Ghana in 2022. But Uzoho's comeback story is one of redemption and growth.
Speaking as the first player to arrive at the Super Eagles camp in Cairo, Egypt, Uzoho expressed his joy and eagerness to reconnect with his teammates. He missed the camaraderie and the vibrant atmosphere of the national team while he was 'in exile'.
"I missed the boys, the camp vibe, and the team spirit," Uzoho shared. "It's a joy to be back and feeling this way. Any player called up to the national team should be ready to give their best. I'm prepared, and if the country needs me, I'll be ready to contribute my best."
Uzoho's relationship with his fellow goalkeepers, Stanley Nwabali and Amas Obasogie, is a positive aspect of his return. He describes Nwabali as his 'brother', indicating a close bond and mutual respect. This camaraderie extends to other players, as he has a good relationship with most of the team.
The Super Eagles camp witnessed a steady stream of early arrivals, including Nwabali, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Akinsanmiro Ebenezer, Ademola Lookman, Igoh Ogbu, Bright Osayomore-Samuel, Tochukwu Nnadi, Obasogie, and Semi Ajay. These players arrived before midnight, ready to prepare for the upcoming friendly match against Egypt.
Despite some senior players requesting exemptions from the Egypt friendly due to injury concerns, they will still travel to Fes, Morocco, the venue for Nigeria's opening 2025 AFCON match against Tanzania's Taifa Stars on December 23. Tunisia and Uganda join Nigeria in Group C, setting the stage for an exciting tournament.
