A humbling experience: Goncalo Borges reflects on Feyenoord's fightback against FC Twente
In a heartwarming display of resilience, Feyenoord's winger Goncalo Borges expressed his pride in the team's performance, despite a challenging 1-1 draw against FC Twente. This result marked Feyenoord's ninth game without a win in their last 12 encounters, a statistic that didn't deter Borges from highlighting the team's spirit.
"It's been a tough road," Borges shared with ESPN. "The recent weeks have tested our mettle. We stay grounded, work tirelessly, but today's game was a real battle."
Indeed, Feyenoord faced 14 goal attempts from Twente in the first half alone, a record for a home game in the Eredivisie since 2010. Despite this, Borges insisted that the team's struggles weren't due to a lack of confidence, but rather the ebb and flow of the game.
"Sometimes you need a reality check, a moment to regroup and find your footing again. That's exactly what we did in the second half. We fought for ourselves, for the team, for the fans, and we're proud of that."
A Touch of Quaresma Magic
Borges' goal, reminiscent of Ricardo Quaresma's iconic trivela, sparked a moment of personal pride. "He's a close friend and an idol, along with my brother," Borges revealed. "I've pulled off similar moves at Porto. It was a great goal, and I know there are more to come."
Despite limited playing time in the first half of the season, Borges exudes confidence. "This is my game. When I'm free, confident, and true to myself, that's when I shine. And this goal? It was a beauty."
The Portuguese talent, who joined Feyenoord from Porto for €11 million in 2025, reflected on a challenging start to the season, including the loss of his grandmother, which kept him away from the club for a period.
"It's been a difficult journey, especially the first six months in a new club and country. Then, during the season, I lost my grandmother, a person I was deeply connected to. It wasn't an easy time, but I channel my emotions on the pitch when I play."
And here's where it gets controversial: Should Feyenoord's fightback be a cause for celebration, or is it a sign of deeper issues within the team? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments!
