Google's Phone App Beta Tests a New Feature, But is it a Privacy Concern?
Google's Phone app is ringing in a new era of communication with its latest beta feature, 'Expressive Calling'. This innovative tool allows users to mark calls as 'urgent', potentially bypassing the sacred Do Not Disturb (DND) mode. But here's where it gets controversial: the power to interrupt someone's DND could be a double-edged sword.
To access this feature, beta users can navigate to Phone Settings, where they'll find the 'Expressive Calling' option. The default setting enhances calls with visual and haptic feedback, but the real game-changer is the option to allow urgent calls to break through DND. When enabled, the caller can mark a call as urgent, prompting the recipient's phone to display an 'It's urgent!' message with a siren emoji.
However, there's a catch. Both the caller and recipient must be using the Google Phone beta (version 203) for this feature to work. If the recipient misses the call, an 'urgent' label will appear in their call history, ensuring they know it wasn't just any regular call.
Meanwhile, the stable channel of Google Phone 202 is out, but some features like the shorter bottom bar and portrait mode setting are still in beta. These minor adjustments are eagerly awaited by users, and a server-side rollout is anticipated soon.
