Hungarian SC Championships Day 1 Recap: Records Fall, Milak's Absence (2026)

The 2025 Hungarian Short Course Championships kicked off with a bang, as 23-year-old Gabor Zombori claimed the men's 200m IM title in 1:55.58, just 0.35 seconds shy of his personal best. This performance set the tone for a highly competitive event, with Botond Kovacs and Austria's Christian Giefing finishing second and third, respectively. The women's 200m IM was equally thrilling, with Eszter Szabo-Feltothy (23) shattering her own record, finishing in 2:10.62, and securing the top spot. Dalma Sebestyen and Laura Zsebok trailed closely behind, with times of 2:10.74 and 2:11.17, respectively.

The men's 100m free saw Adam Jaszo break through the 47-second barrier, clocking an impressive 46.58. Nandor Nemeth, the reigning national record holder, finished just 0.02 seconds behind, securing the silver medal. Levente Mozsarik claimed the bronze. Teenager Sebestyen Papp made waves by setting a new Hungarian Age Record for 17-year-olds in the 100m free, stopping the clock at 48.26, and shaving 0.10 seconds off the previous record. He also claimed silver in the men's 50m back, further solidifying his talent.

The women's 1500m freestyle witnessed a new Hungarian National Age Record, as Napsugar Nagy finished in 16:06.81, just 0.33 seconds behind the national record holder Ajna Kesely. Victoria Mihalyvari-Farkas took home the bronze. In the men's 100m breaststroke, Austrian Olympians Christopher Rothbauer and Valentin Bayer dominated, finishing in 58.02 and 59.37, respectively. Panna Ugrai, a 21-year-old swimmer, showcased her versatility by claiming gold in the women's 100m free and silver in the 50m back.

The championships also saw the rise of David Betlehem, who claimed the men's 1500m freestyle title in 14:27.39, his second-best performance. Kristof Rasovszky and Mate Karpati secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the same event. As for the future of Hungarian swimming, it's worth noting that world record holder and Olympic champion Kristof Milak, who hasn't raced since April, is not competing in these championships. According to the Hungarian Swimming Federation, he's been focusing on land training.

This event was a testament to the competitive spirit and talent within Hungarian swimming, with multiple records broken and a diverse range of events showcased.
