A City’s Water Crisis: Was It Really Just a Toilet?
The tragic deaths of at least 10 people in Indore’s Bhagirathpura neighborhood have sparked a frantic search for the source of contaminated water. But here’s where it gets controversial: while a poorly constructed police outpost toilet remains the prime suspect, engineers are now widening their investigation, questioning whether this single source could truly account for the localized outbreak. Following intense scrutiny from both the opposition and within the BJP, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has mandated a comprehensive overhaul of Madhya Pradesh’s water management systems. This includes rigorous maintenance, continuous quality monitoring, and swift leak detection. In Indore, this directive has mobilized a massive 200-person task force, comprising engineers, health officials, and magistrates, all scouring the city for hidden culprits.
Initially, the investigation pointed to a seemingly obvious culprit: a police chowki built directly above a main water line in Bhagirathpura. Its makeshift bathroom, lacking a proper septic tank, allowed waste to accumulate and potentially seep into the water supply through a broken pipe. However, this is the part most people miss: the contamination appears confined to Bhagirathpura, despite the city’s 105 water tankers supplying water across Indore. This localized pattern has raised doubts about the toilet being the sole source, prompting a deeper, more complex investigation.
Teams are now conducting heavy metal tests on pipelines and meticulously inspecting the city’s 1,000 sewerage access chambers for leaks or structural weaknesses that could allow sewage to contaminate water mains. This grueling process, taking 20 minutes per chamber, is further complicated by Bhagirathpura’s labyrinthine lanes, barely 8 feet wide, where equipment must be manually transported. Engineers are even digging up broadband lines, leaving no stone unturned in their quest for answers.
Simultaneously, another team is testing the city’s water tankers for chlorine levels and bacterial contamination, ensuring the safety of this vital water source. Instead of inspecting every pipe, an impossible feat, the investigation employs a risk-based approach, targeting densely populated areas with aging pipelines (over 20 years old) and those running near or below drains and sewers.
As of December 24, 310 people have been hospitalized, with 25 in intensive care. The Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court has ordered additional water tankers to the affected area, addressing complaints about inadequate supply. On the ground, residents like Rahul and Kishore express lingering fears about water quality, relying on boiled or purchased water for their families. Kishore’s three-year-old son fell ill, highlighting the ongoing crisis.
The situation has also become politically charged, with opposition Congress leaders facing protests during their visit to Bhagirathpura. Accusations of BJP involvement in the protests have further fueled tensions, while Samajwadi Party workers defaced a state minister’s nameplate. Police in riot gear have intervened to maintain order, detaining 40-45 individuals preventively.
