The Jacksonville Jaguars' approach to free agency this year has raised eyebrows, to say the least. While many teams are splurging on big-name free agents, the Jaguars have chosen a different path, prioritizing compensatory picks over substantial spending. This strategy, as explained by General Manager James Gladstone, is a calculated move with long-term benefits in mind.
The Compensatory Pick Strategy
Gladstone's rationale is straightforward: the Jaguars are focusing on accumulating draft capital through compensatory picks. These picks are awarded to teams when they lose key free agents and don't sign other teams' free agents. By letting go of high-priced free agents, the Jaguars are essentially trading short-term spending for long-term gains.
The team is projected to receive three compensatory picks in the 2027 draft: a fourth-round pick for linebacker Devin Lloyd, a fifth-round pick for running back Travis Etienne, and a sixth-round pick for cornerback Greg Newsome. While it might seem like a sacrifice, Gladstone sees it as an opportunity.
"High-priced free agents of ours ended up signing elsewhere, well-deserved contracts," he said. "They did their part to put themselves in really sound positions to earn that. Excited for all those guys. In return, by not signing any outside free agents, we recoup 2027 draft capital."
Beyond the Draft
Gladstone emphasizes that acquiring draft picks isn't just about the draft itself. It's also about the flexibility it provides for trading picks for veteran players. The Jaguars demonstrated this by trading two picks last season to bolster their receiving corps.
"I think on its surface, you might think, oh, you're giving up picks in 2027," Gladstone said. "But in reality, those draft picks and having more of them actually allow you the luxury of remaining in the hunt at different intervals throughout the year for acquiring players."
This approach, he argues, gives the Jaguars the flexibility to make strategic moves during the offseason and regular season.
The Long-Term Payoff
While this strategy might not generate much attention during free agency, Gladstone believes it can pay off significantly during the season. By building up their draft capital, the Jaguars can maintain their flexibility and remain competitive in the trade market.
"Without that draft capital at your disposal, you may not be as willing or able to relinquish some of those future picks," he said. "So by building that up now, it allows us the luxury of remaining with the flexibility to do those sorts of things as we move into the next stages of the offseason and into the regular season."
