Get ready for some thrilling badminton action as the Korea Masters 2025 kicks off! But here's a twist: India's team for this tournament is a far cry from what we've come to expect. With a young and relatively inexperienced squad, the pressure is on for our Indian athletes.
Leading the charge are Sankar Subramanian and Isharani Baruah, both 21-year-old veterans in this lean four-member team. They'll be representing India at the Korea Masters, which is a BWF Super 300 tournament, taking place at the Wonkwang University Cultural and Sports Center in the Republic of Korea.
While some of India's top badminton stars, like PV Sindhu and Lakhsya Sen, have opted out due to injuries or other commitments, this opens up opportunities for our younger players to shine. However, it's a challenging road ahead, as none of the Indian shuttlers have ever won a title at the Korea Masters.
In the men's singles, Sankar Subramanian, ranked 65th in the world, will be the lone Indian representative. He'll face a tough battle against top seed Jia Heng Jason Teh of Indonesia. On the women's side, Isharani Baruah, ranked 53rd, will be joined by Devika Sihag, a 20-year-old who finished as a runner-up at the Indonesia Masters last month. Completing the women's squad is 17-year-old Naishaa Kaur Bhatoye, who will make her maiden Super 300 appearance in the women's singles qualifiers.
And this is the part most people miss: Naishaa, who portrayed a young Saina Nehwal in the Bollywood biopic 'Saina', has only competed in two Super 100 BWF senior tournaments prior to this.
Unfortunately, there will be no Indian presence in the doubles events at the Korea Masters this year.
So, will this young Indian squad surprise us and bring home a title? Or will they face the same challenges as their more experienced counterparts?
You can catch all the action live in India on the BWF TV YouTube channel. The Korea Masters won't be telecast live on any TV channels in India, so make sure to tune in online!
