Lyme Disease: A Growing Concern in the USA, But Are We Doing Enough to Prevent It?
Did you know that Lyme disease has quietly become a widespread issue in the United States? This tick-borne illness, first discovered in Connecticut, has now expanded its reach significantly. With an estimated 476,000 cases diagnosed annually, it's a pressing health matter.
A recent survey across 28 states reveals a surprising paradox: while most people are aware of Lyme disease, many don't take preventive measures. This is despite the fact that a large majority of adults and children spend time outdoors in their yards and engage in recreational activities.
But here's the catch: only 34-40% of adults and 40-42% of children consistently use preventive measures during these outdoor activities. Researchers suggest that people might not fully grasp which activities put them at risk. For instance, ticks are often encountered during everyday activities like walking the dog or playing in the yard, not just while hiking or camping.
And Lyme disease isn't the only tick-borne threat. The CDC highlights that early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are crucial to preventing severe diseases caused by tick bites. However, should we be more proactive in recommending antibiotics after tick bites? The CDC currently doesn't recommend this approach.
On the bright side, there's an innovative vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer showing promise in clinical trials. The VLA15 vaccine has been granted Fast Track designation and is the only Lyme disease vaccine in advanced phase 3 clinical development as of November 2025. Nature enthusiasts eagerly await its potential approval in 2026.
