Porirua College's head of mathematics, Jennifer Crisp, expressed surprise at the final version's deviation from the draft she and other teachers had provided feedback on. She noted that some topics have been pushed to earlier year levels, raising concerns about the potential difficulty for students to keep up. University of Auckland mathematics education lecturer Lisa Darragh highlighted the removal of key areas, including the statistical inquiry cycle and probability from the early years of schooling, which she found ironic given New Zealand's strong performance in statistics. Education officials defend the changes, attributing them to careful consideration of teacher feedback and international comparisons. Pauline Cleaver from the Ministry of Education emphasized the final version's aim to ensure learning is appropriately challenging. However, Education Minister Erica Stanford dismissed suggestions of a complete overhaul, asserting that the curriculum update is largely a refinement of existing knowledge.
