Full Sail Grad Brad Biwer, a Senior Licensing Representative at BMI, Shares Insights with Students
On November 13, Full Sail University Music Business graduate Brad Biwer took the stage to deliver a captivating Music Industry Talk to eager students. He engaged in an insightful Q&A session with Israel Vasquetelle, Program Director for Entertainment & Music Business, offering a wealth of knowledge gained from his career experiences. Brad delved into his previous role as Market Research Coordinator for the Vans Warped Tour, where he utilized attendee feedback to enhance experiences, but his primary focus lies in his current position at BMI, a role that involves managing music rights and advocating for songwriters in Nashville.
The audience comprised students enrolled in degree programs such as Music Business, Entertainment Business, Music Production, and Recording Arts, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn from an industry professional who once walked in their shoes.
Brad shed light on the often-overlooked fact that music is an intellectual property belonging to songwriters. He explained that BMI represents music publishers, composers, and songwriters, ensuring they receive royalties when their music is performed publicly. His role entails communicating with public venues like bars, restaurants, and coffee shops, ensuring they have the necessary permits to legally use the music.
"We do an excellent job of educating these venues," Brad emphasized. "We explain why copyright permission is essential." He added, "Most people don't consider music as property, but it is the intellectual property of the songwriters."
The students were given the opportunity to engage with Brad, asking questions and gaining valuable insights into the highs and lows of his career. He offered candid advice to those aspiring to follow similar career paths, providing a comprehensive and inspiring perspective on the music industry.
