Over 30 Bronze Whaler Sharks Spotted at Mangawhai Bar - Stunning Drone Footage! (2026)

Unbelievable Discovery: Drone Footage Captures a Massive Gathering of Sharks at Mangawhai Bar

A breathtaking discovery has left a Northland wildlife photographer in awe. Andy Bruce, from Elevated Media, recently captured stunning drone footage of an astonishing 30 bronze whaler sharks swimming along the Mangawhai bar. This remarkable encounter was made even more fascinating by the presence of a large bait ball of kahawai just outside the estuary, seemingly keeping an eye on the sharks.

Bruce, who has been aware of the sharks' presence in his local waterway since before Christmas, shared his excitement with 1News. On Tuesday morning, he ventured out near the Mangawhai sandbar, close to the boating channel, and captured footage of what he initially estimated to be around 20 sharks. As he flew higher, the count increased to an impressive 33.

The footage revealed the sharks swimming alongside a vast school of kahawai in shallow waters, likely attracted by the bait ball. Bruce noted the noticeable size variation among the sharks, with some being significantly larger than others. Bronze whalers can grow up to 3 meters in length, typically averaging between 1.5 and 2.5 meters.

Living in Mangawhai for five years, Bruce has witnessed sharks in the area regularly. One local ocean swimming group even affectionately nicknamed a resident shark, Felicity. Despite his experience, he had never encountered such a large number of bronze whalers before.

Bruce expressed his hope that the images would help people view sharks in a different light. He believes sharks have a negative reputation, and he's eager to showcase their beauty and harmless nature. He said, 'It’s wonderful we get to have these amazing experiences with nature so close to shore.'

This incredible discovery highlights the importance of appreciating and understanding marine life, even the ones often feared. The footage is available on TVNZ+, offering viewers a unique perspective on this remarkable gathering of sharks.
