After a rough patch at the box office, things are looking up this weekend with Disney/20th Century Studios' 'Predator: Badlands' on track for a strong opening. According to Deadline, the film is projected to gross around $37 million, which is a significant improvement over earlier predictions. While adjusted for inflation, the opening is modest, but it's a positive sign for the franchise, especially considering the previous film, 'Prey', was a direct-to-Hulu release. With an A- CinemaScore rating, the buzz around 'Predator: Badlands' is positive, and it's similar to the success of 'Alien: Romulus' last year. If the movie stays within a reasonable budget, it could be a long-term, profitable venture for the studio.
One interesting factor is the film's PG-13 rating, which has sparked debate among fans. Disney's decision to target a younger audience is evident, but it remains to be seen if this strategy will pay off. 'Alien: Romulus', which was rated R, had a slightly better opening, though it was released during the summer. The upcoming release of 'The Running Man', with a hard R rating, will be a crucial test for this strategy.
In other box office news, the Colleen Hoover adaptation 'Regretting You' is expected to take second place with approximately $6.5 million in gross, while 'The Black Phone 2' will be a distant third with $4.2 million. 'Nuremberg', from Sony Classics, is projected to open with around $3.5 million in a semi-wide release. The Sydney Sweeney-led boxing biopic 'Christy' has not yet reported its numbers, but it received a decent B+ CinemaScore rating. Unfortunately, 'Die My Love', starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, received a D+ rating, which was expected given its challenging and intense narrative.
Stay tuned for a comprehensive breakdown of the weekend's box office results tomorrow. What are you planning to watch this weekend? Share your thoughts in the comments!
