The UK's first permanent illustration hub is set to open in central London this spring, marking a significant milestone in the world of art. This new centre, housed in an 18th-century waterworks in Clerkenwell, aims to celebrate the rich traditions of illustration and showcase its astonishing diversity. With a price tag of £12.5 million, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration is poised to become the world's largest dedicated space for this art form, a dream that has been 20 years in the making.
Sir Quentin Blake, the renowned artist and author, expressed his pride in the centre bearing his name, stating, 'Illustration is a wonderful universal and varied language.' Blake's passion for illustration led him to establish a charity in 2002, and the House of Illustration, previously located in King's Cross, has been a beacon for illustration enthusiasts since 2014.
The new centre will not only showcase the art of illustration but also provide a platform for exploration and discovery. It will feature a solo exhibition by MURUGIAH, whose vibrant and colourful art draws inspiration from film, sci-fi, Japanese anime, and 2000s pop-punk. This exhibition will be housed in the Grade II-listed Engine House, adding to the centre's allure.
Lindsey Glen, the director of the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration, emphasized the universal importance of illustration, stating, 'Every day, people all over the world use illustration to share stories and ideas – to communicate, express, inform, and persuade.' The centre will offer a range of attractions, including a free library, learning spaces, and art installations that highlight the site's 400-year history. Additionally, illustrator residencies will be held in London's oldest surviving windmill, and free public gardens will be available for visitors to enjoy.
