Get ready for a dramatic twist at the iconic Rose Parade! As rain soaks Southern California, the 2026 Rose Parade faces an unprecedented challenge. With a near-certain forecast of rain, this year's parade promises to be a unique and memorable event. But here's where it gets controversial: will the show go on despite the weather?
The region is already experiencing wet conditions, and meteorologists are predicting a 100% chance of rain on the parade route, including overnight. This marks the first time in over a decade that organizers are dealing with a wet New Year's celebration.
"The rain is expected to intensify late tonight and continue into tomorrow morning," says Bryan Lewis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service's Oxnard office. Within this timeframe, there's also a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms, which could bring an added element of danger.
Lightning is a concern, especially in large open areas with crowds and steel-framed floats. "Floats could be vulnerable, especially out in the open," Lewis warns. "Winds and heavy rain could pose challenges, and if lightning strikes, people should seek cover indoors or in vehicles."
Pasadena spokesperson Lisa Derderian assures that organizers are prepared for various weather scenarios and will have a meteorologist on-site during the parade. "We train for the worst and hope for the best," she says. "We have personnel and resources ready to assist if extreme weather conditions arise."
In 2006, a similar situation led to breakdowns, wet instruments, and flags. This time, organizers are better prepared, with ponchos for float riders and additional tow trucks along the route.
Event attendees are reminded that umbrellas are not allowed, as they obstruct the view for others. Instead, parade-goers are encouraged to bring rain jackets or ponchos.
Even without lightning, the storm system could bring heavy downpours and gusty winds, with the potential for urban flooding in Pasadena and Los Angeles. The city's Emergency Operations Center is activated, and police and fire departments are taking precautions.
"Stay vigilant and use caution on the roads," urges Mayor Karen Bass. "We're taking every precaution to keep people safe."
The state has pre-positioned emergency crews in high-risk areas, especially in recent burn scar regions. Governor Gavin Newsom emphasizes, "California is bracing for intense winter weather, and we're prepared."
This storm follows a Christmas deluge that caused fatalities, rescues, and toppled trees. Some mountain communities were buried in mud, and while this incoming system won't be as intense, the drenched soil is more susceptible to rock and mudslides.
The system is approaching from the south, and strong Santa Ana winds are easing. Showers are expected to linger through Friday, with rainfall totals ranging from 3/4 inch to 2 inches in coastal and valley areas, and up to 5 inches in foothill and mountain communities.
Flood watches are in effect for much of Los Angeles and Orange counties, with evacuation warnings in areas affected by recent fires. Road closures are planned, and emergency crews are staged across the state to respond to various weather-related incidents.
"By being proactive, we can respond faster and more effectively," Newsom says.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has ratified a local emergency proclamation to expedite storm damage reimbursement and recovery efforts.
