Gone are the days when running shoes were solely reserved for pounding the pavement during a morning jog. Today, these once-niche athletic shoes have become a staple for everyday wear, blurring the lines between performance and casual comfort. But here's where it gets controversial: are running shoes truly the best option for daily walking, or are we sacrificing long-term foot health for trendy aesthetics?

According to Beth Goldstein, Circana’s industry advisor for footwear and accessories, the surge in running shoe popularity isn’t just about athletic performance anymore. While the sport of running has undoubtedly grown as people embrace healthier lifestyles, consumers are increasingly prioritizing comfort for everyday activities. “Running shoes fit that bill,” Goldstein explains, noting that fashion trends have also played a significant role in this shift.

To dig deeper, Circana surveyed 1,000 consumers about their running habits. The results were eye-opening: 49% identified as casual, moderate, or serious runners, while 51% considered themselves non-runners. Among runners, more than half described themselves as casual, running only occasionally. About a third ran regularly, and a dedicated 10% were serious runners participating in races and events.

Interestingly, the growth in running shoe sales isn’t evenly distributed across age groups. Teens (ages 13–17) represent a small but impactful segment, driving about a quarter of the growth despite accounting for only 12% of total sales. Goldstein suggests that parents are likely the ones footing the bill for these purchases. Growth tapers off slightly as teens transition into the 18–24 age bracket, possibly because young adults are buying their own shoes and may be more budget-conscious.

The real growth, however, is coming from two distinct demographics: the 25–34 age group, which represents about 20% of the market but contributes a whopping 40% of the growth, and the 55-plus group, also accounting for 20% of the market and a third of the growth. This highlights a fascinating trend—running shoes are appealing to both young professionals and older adults seeking comfort and style.

So, which brands are leading the charge? Brooks and Hoka are currently battling for the top spot, with Brooks holding a slight edge in volume. But this is the part most people miss: Nike and Adidas, once dominant players, are making a comeback. After focusing on premium products and partnering with high-end retailers, both brands are seeing strong growth. “They’re definitely trying to break back into the market,” Goldstein observes.

Other brands are also making strides. Skechers, traditionally known for mid-tier offerings, is pushing into the premium running shoe space. Altra, once a specialty brand, is expanding its distribution and diversifying its product line to cater to average runners. Meanwhile, brands like Mizuno and Topo are gaining traction in the run specialty market.

Here’s the kicker: while the industry often caters to serious runners with high-tech features and premium price points, casual runners represent the largest untapped opportunity. For this group, quality, durability, fit, and comfort are paramount, with performance and innovation playing secondary roles. This opens up exciting possibilities for retailers and brands to segment their products and address the diverse needs of different runner types.

Goldstein points out that major sporting goods retailers like Dick’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker are better equipped to cater to serious runners with in-depth product knowledge. In contrast, family channel retailers could benefit from more educational signage to guide casual shoppers.

When asked why they purchased running shoes, 42% of respondents cited athletic use. However, a surprising 60% bought them for non-athletic purposes: 32% for casual/everyday wear, 10% for recreational or social occasions, and 9% for work. The remaining respondents used their shoes for a mix of all purposes.
