For Pearl Lowe, holidays aren't always a breeze. With a diagnosis of both ADHD and OCD, the very act of traveling presents unique challenges. This is the reality for the fashion and interiors designer, and former singer-songwriter, as she navigates the complexities of travel. But, as we'll discover, it doesn't stop her from seeking out incredible experiences. Pearl, 55, is a London native, married to musician Danny Goffey, with whom she shares three children: Alfie, Frankie, and Betty. She also has a daughter, the model Daisy Lowe, from a previous relationship. Currently residing in Frome, Somerset, Pearl's life is a vibrant mix of family, design, and, of course, travel.
"Holidays are tough," Pearl admits, citing her OCD, which demands a meticulously controlled environment, and her ADHD, which often leads to travel mishaps. From arriving at the airport on the wrong day to forgetting to pack altogether, she's experienced it all. And this is the part most people miss... While she may struggle with the practicalities, her love for travel shines through. She often overpacks, even if she ends up wearing the same dress every day. Fortunately, she can borrow clothes from her daughters, with the exception of Betty's, whose style is a bit too daring.
Long-haul flights aren't her favorite, but some destinations are worth the journey. Sri Lanka, visited just before the pandemic, left a lasting impression. "It was a mind-blowingly gorgeous country," she recalls, highlighting the kindness of the people and the beauty of the hotels. From Colombo to Tangalle, where they enjoyed the Amanwella and a crocodile safari, the family explored the best of the island. And this is where it gets controversial...Do you think Sri Lanka is underrated?
Mexico also holds a special place in her heart. She raves about Tulum, where she stayed at La Valise and Our Habitas, and dreams of visiting Mexico City, particularly to explore Frida Kahlo's house.
Currently downsizing, Pearl is in the process of selling her 11-bedroom Somerset home. While she spends a few days a week in their Notting Hill flat, Frome remains her primary residence. Her favorite restaurant in the world, High Pavement, a tapas gem, is located in Frome. The town's monthly market, with its incredible food and antiques, is another favorite. Somerset itself boasts some of the UK's best hotels, with Number One Bruton and Babington House being particular standouts.
While the move occupies her thoughts, Pearl is eager to travel again. She considered a home-swap holiday but was disappointed by the options. Morocco is another destination she loves, particularly El Fenn in Marrakesh, a colorful boutique hotel with amazing food. She also enjoyed the Atlas Mountains, where she celebrated a friend's 50th birthday.
Greece, especially Paxos, is another cherished destination. While they usually rent a villa, one year they chartered the 109-year-old boat, Circe, which offered a magical experience, despite the small cabins. The skipper, Adonis, serenaded them with his guitar as the sun set.
One travel low point was a family holiday to Goa, India, where a nasty bug spread through the resort, making everyone ill. Despite this, she hopes to return to India, specifically to visit Jaipur.
As a child, Pearl spent every August in Mallorca, always at the same Meliá hotel. Later, family holidays took her to Barbados, where they stayed at the Sandy Lane hotel. Her father purchased a house in Miami when she was nine, and she spent her teens there. She loves the city's architecture, colors, and food, and it holds a special place in her heart, especially after her father's passing in 2016.
Her first independent holiday was to Club Med in Provence at 17, where she and her friends had a memorable experience.
Pearl Lowe's book, Faded Glamour in the City, is now available.
