The fate of our planet hangs in the balance, and the world's leaders are gathering to find solutions. The seventh session of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) has begun in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to chart a course toward a more resilient future. This isn't just another meeting; it's a critical moment for global environmental policy.
UNEA-7, the world's highest decision-making body on environmental issues, includes all 193 UN Member States. It meets every two years to establish global environmental priorities. The decisions and resolutions made here directly influence the work of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
"Today we reaffirm our shared responsibility: to transform our determination into tangible results for people, ecosystems, and our planet’s stability," stated H. E. Abdullah Bin Ali Al-Amri, President of UNEA-7. He further emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste, which test our economies, societies, and even our trust in collective action.
This year, the Assembly will tackle 15 draft resolutions on pressing issues, from protecting glaciers to managing massive seaweed blooms and mitigating the environmental impact of artificial intelligence. While not legally binding, these resolutions help countries find common ground and have historically paved the way for significant international agreements.
"This Assembly must dig deeper than ever, because environmental challenges are accelerating," warned Inger Andersen, Executive Director of UNEP. She highlighted the alarming reality of rising global temperatures, ecosystem degradation, intensifying dust storms, and persistent pollution. She also stressed the need to navigate turbulent geopolitical waters to achieve a stable climate, a safe and clean environment, and a pollution-free future.
Prior to UNEA-7, several preparatory events took place, including a Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum, a Cities and Regions Summit, and a Youth Environment Assembly. The Youth Assembly saw over 1,000 youth delegates from around the world come together to issue the Global Youth Declaration, which outlines their priorities for UNEA.
Beyond the draft resolutions, UNEA-7 will feature high-profile discussions on the importance of environmental sustainability for industry, global finance, and human health. The high-level segment on the penultimate day will bring together global leaders, including heads of state and government.
On December 9th, UNEP will launch the seventh edition of its Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7) and name five climate trailblazers as its Champions of the Earth for 2025.
Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa, Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, emphasized the need for wise resource management, inclusive societies, and innovation. She highlighted Kenya's commitment to partnership, stating, "Today, partnership is not optional, it is absolutely essential."
UNEA-7 has attracted over 6,000 registered participants from more than 180 countries, including 79 Ministers and 35 Vice-Ministers. The event's theme is "Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet."
