Imagine your phone acting up after an update – frustrating, right? Until recently, fixing problems caused by Google Play System updates felt like navigating a maze. But what if I told you there's a new, simpler way to undo those updates, right from your phone?
For years, Google Play System updates have been quietly delivering essential features and security improvements to our Android devices. These updates are crucial, but a faulty one could wreak havoc. The old solution? A clunky process involving connecting your phone to a computer and using the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) – not exactly user-friendly!
But here's the good news: Google is rolling out an on-device uninstall option, making it easier than ever to revert problematic Google Play System updates. This welcome change comes via something called "Mainline services."

Think of it this way: you install a new app, and suddenly your phone starts behaving strangely. Typically, uninstalling the app is straightforward. If that doesn't work, you might consider a factory reset – a drastic measure that wipes your phone clean. And if even that fails, you could try flashing new firmware. But what if the culprit is a Google Play System update? Do you really want to go through all that trouble?
Google Play System updates touch many critical aspects of your phone's functionality. It's not unreasonable to think that an update could inadvertently introduce a bug or conflict. The ability to quickly and easily roll back to a previous, stable version is a game-changer.
Previously, Google offered the Google Play System Update Rollbacks (GPSUR) tool. And this is the part most people miss: Using GPSUR involved developer options and connecting your phone to a computer configured with the Android Debug Bridge (ADB). This method was intimidating for the average user.
Now, a more convenient solution is appearing directly on our devices.
We've discovered a new entry within Google Play Services called "Mainline services". It's not available on all devices yet, indicating a gradual rollout.
Tapping "Mainline services" takes you to its Play Store entry. What you see there depends on whether you have a pending Google Play System update. As you may already know, Mainline updates are simply another name for Google Play System updates.
Once your phone downloads an update, it requires a restart to complete the installation. The phone won't automatically restart; you'll see a button prompting you to do so. After restarting, you'll see the "Remove updates" button which is what we're most interested in.
Tapping "Remove Updates" triggers a dialogue box warning you about potential consequences and giving you a chance to back out. In our testing, uninstalling updates worked as expected. We were able to install an update, remove it, and then see it reappear as available for installation.
Hopefully, you won't ever need this tool. It's still somewhat hidden and clearly not intended for everyday use. But here's where it gets controversial... Should Google make this feature more accessible, or is it best left tucked away for advanced users? Making it too easy to roll back updates could lead to instability if users constantly revert to older versions without understanding the implications.
This new on-device uninstall option is a significant improvement. At least when the need arises, you won't be forced to connect to a computer and mess with ADB.
