Universe Expansion Slowing? Dark Energy Weakening Study Shocks Cosmology (2025)

The universe's expansion may be slowing, not accelerating, a new study suggests, challenging a Nobel Prize-winning theory. If confirmed, this finding could revolutionize our understanding of the universe's fate, potentially leading to a 'big crunch' scenario. The study's astronomers propose that dark energy, the force believed to drive the universe's expansion, is weakening over time. This research, led by Prof. Young-Wook Lee of Yonsei University in South Korea, has sparked intense debate among cosmologists. The study questions the reliability of observations of distant supernovae, which led to the discovery of dark energy and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011. Lee highlights a key assumption that has been proven incorrect, akin to fastening a shirt button wrongly from the start. The assumption was that gravity would act as a cosmic brake, slowing the universe's expansion. However, observations of type 1a supernovae, considered 'standard candles' due to their uniform light, revealed that distant supernovae were dimmer than expected for a slowing universe, leading to the conclusion of accelerated expansion. The new study offers an alternative explanation: variations in star properties in the early universe result in fainter supernovae on average. Correcting for this bias still indicates an expanding universe but suggests a slower expansion and a waning dark energy. If dark energy continues to decrease, it could theoretically lead to a big crunch. Prof. Carlos Frenk, a cosmologist at the University of Durham, acknowledges the study's provocative nature, stating that it warrants attention and further discussion.
