Yellow-Legged Hornet Nests Found on Auckland's North Shore! Threat to NZ? (2026)

Auckland's North Shore is facing a buzzing invasion! Two nests of the deadly yellow-legged hornets, a mere 100 meters apart, have been discovered and removed. But this isn't an isolated incident. The aggressive hornets, a threat to humans, biodiversity, and our beloved honey bees, have been spreading their wings across Auckland.

The Ministry of Primary Industries has confirmed that biosecurity staff uncovered two nests in Glenfield, with one nest housing a royal family of sorts - a queen, her loyal workers, and two adults ready to take flight. The other nest, slightly smaller, also had a queen awaiting her subjects.

And here's where it gets intriguing: these nests were found just a stone's throw away from previous discoveries. The biosecurity team's increased surveillance efforts have paid off, but the question remains - how many more nests are out there?

So far, nine queen hornets have been found in Glenfield and Birkdale, with all nests and hornets swiftly removed. But the mission isn't over. Biosecurity NZ is stepping up their game, searching parks and reserves, and setting protein-based traps to lure these invaders. With over 120 people involved and 180 traps laid, it's all hands on deck!

But here's where it gets controversial - are these efforts enough? With the hornets' potential to wreak havoc on the environment and public health, should we be doing more? The debate is open, and we'd love to hear your thoughts. Is this a cause for concern or a manageable situation?
